		The indication of the speed indicator »overrules« the indication of the main signal. In the right example for instance the main signal allows 60 km/h, but the speed indicator increases the allowd speed to 100 km/h.
		Distant speed indicators on distant signals are only necessary, if there is a decrease in speed of more than 10 km/h. But they may still be provided in all other cases.
		Even combinations of main signals with distant speed indicators and vice versa are possible.

Explanation

Speed indicators are used ...

to supplement a main signal (to show a speed restriction other than 40 or 60 km/h)
to supplement a protection signal (which has no speed indication)
standalone to show a change in speed restriction within a point area
to announce a short entry (speed indicators for 20 or 30 km/h)
