Main signal (Hauptsignal)
Main signals are capable of showing »stop«. They are marked with a round white border. If the signal is dark (e.g. due to lamp failure) the engine driver has to stop at the signal.

Distant signal (Vorsignal)
These signals cannot show a ''stop''-aspect and they are marked with a quadratic white border (think of the quadratic distant signals of the system L as a hint). A dark signal has to be treated as if it showed »caution«.

Most signals (except for pure block signals) are equipped with an additional indicator that can display several numbers or symbols.

Indicated speed (number times 10) applies from the next signal.

Pre warning (Vorwarnung)
The next signal shows ''warning'' and is located at less than braking distance from the next but one signal which shows ''stop''.

Auxiliary signal N (Hilfssignal N)
Permission to pass the signal

Occupied track (Besetztes Gleis)
Route leads into an occupied track.

Short entry (Kurze Fahrt)
Next signal shows ''stop'' and is located in less than braking distance.

Announcment entry signal N (Voranzeige Einfahrsignal N)
The next signal is a home signal.

Home signals are provided with name plates (start of station boards) which show the station name's abbreviation (up to 4 characters, e.g. Bel = Bellinzona).

The asterisks show that this signal is a Repeating signal.
Repeating signals are provided, if sighting distance to the main signal is insufficient.

Resume line speed (Streckengeschwindigkeit)
Beginning from this board line speed is allowed. A speed restriction signalled on the preceeding main signal is no longer valid.
